![]() By 11:30 we were back on the road heading for our next destination. As we crossed the Yarra River on the Princes (sic) Bridge, we could see the Rod Laver Arena in the distance, named after the famous Australian tennis pro from the '60s. |
![]() We passed this cool-looking building, the ACMI, the "Museum of Screen Culture, navigating the universe of film, TV, video games and art", then the Greek Centre, then the Comedy Theatre showing "Gaslight", and this old church, St. Patrick's Cathedral, before getting our first view of our next stop, ... |
![]() ...the Fitzroy Gardens. Wait a minute. What's this? Many of the trees in the garden (and in many other public parks) are covered with these polycarbonate wraps which keep possums, apparently a problem in the city, from climbing the trees and damaging them. Off the bus now, we entered the gardens. |
![]() Upon entering the grounds, we immediately came across the small conservatory building with a statue of "Diana and the Hounds" in front and flowers inside. There weren't a lot of flowers in here; we, of course, were thinking we'd see many more outside around the grounds. It was somewhat disappointing. |
![]() A short walk from the Conservatory stood Cooks' Cottage, the old home of the parents of Captain James Cook, another Australian hero (he never lived in there). Our tour guide advised us not to bother to go in (there was an entrance fee) as there really wasn't anything worth seeing inside. |
![]() So we continued into the garden looking for pretty flowers, following a grass-and-greenery-lined paved trail with these along it, and a brick trail where we spotted these, eventually leading us to... |
![]() ...this small grotto with a small pool (with no fish in it), and not much else. We backtracked to the main trail and saw this promising flower-lined trail which, unfortunately, we didn't have the time to follow as we had to get back to our bus which would be departing soon. That may have been the trail we needed to follow.... |
![]() Passing through the Conservatory would be a shortcut back to the bus, so we headed that way, eventually boarding the bus to take "the scenic route through downtown" (as the tour guide told us) back to the ship. Next Top |
