The original definition of this call was quite different, and in fact long predated Slim Down. The recognition that it was equivalent to the 3-call series given above, and the adoption of that as its definition, was more recent. The original definition only worked from waves, and was not fractionalizable. Purists may consider the reformulation improper. It is nevertheless widely accepted.
