On September 14, 2016, I received the following e-mail:
I didn't know much about the history of the property, but when I asked him, my older brother, Joel, sent me this:
I don't know for sure, but there was a counselor at the camp, Boots, who lived in the area and was a hunter, fisherman and wilderness
guide back then. He occasionally told stories that the camp was once owned by Chicago gangsters connected with the Al Capone gang. The gang owned several
taverns in the area after prohibition, mostly in Mercer, Wisconsin, and used the camp grounds as part of the liquor smuggling business during prohibition.
So, after doing a search on the Internet, I found this listing for the old Forest Wonder Camp property:
Taken from the listing, below are a bunch of pictures of the home now on the property and some of the beautiful water and land
included with the 4 acre house lot. If I had the money, well, no, I still don't think I'd want to live there (like I once wanted). Its
extreme seclusion probably means no Internet or cell phone service, no cable, particularly tough and inconvenient winters (a lot
of snow plowing!), etc. Once a dream, no longer.
